The Basics of Fumigation

Fumigation or Fumigacion as it is called in Spanish is the process of controlling pest infestation in a place or in a commodity through the use of a fumigant which is a chemical that is lethal to a pest when at the right temperature and pressure it is in its gaseous state. The advantage of using a fumigant over other pest control methods is that fumigants are lethal to all forms of life and can therefore be used to control a pest at any stage of its life. Fumigation is quick, inexpensive and efficient. In comparison to sprays, aerosols, and dusts used in pest control, fumigants are able to reach places they cannot.

In commercial fumigation or fumigacion, there are two common methods that are used. One method completely seals the building while the other method encloses the structure in a nylon tent. The chemical is then inserted in the area to eliminate all pests. The fumigation process can be completed in a few hours or sometimes it might take a few days. This is dependent on the size and the type of building that is being fumigated, the type of pest that is being eliminated, and the temperature of the fumigant.

It is important to know that fumigation is dangerous to people who live or work in the building that is being fumigated. During the fumigation process, people are required to leave the building and to only return once the process has been completed. (more...)
